What is serious art and literature?
By “serious literature” Russell
Kirk meant writing that inspires the moral
imagination.
With me all writing inspires the
moral imagination, since I think in those terms anyway, much writing and art
can be defined as immoral this way.
I would rather say serious or high art
and literature affirms morality or the
sacred in imaginative ways. That is, great art is an imaginative
affirmation of the sacred.
