Biological signaling and art theory (from the archive)

Theories on art from evolutionary psychology tend to take the arrogance and humbug out of philosophies of art. For example, art is seen as an extension of sexual selection, which itself is an extension of the more practical and efficient natural selection. Denis Dutton has done excellent work in examining, with very clear writing, the origin of art. These studies got me thinking about how to distinguish individual-selection and group-selection in art, which has not been much written about.

Individualistic art can be seen as the personal ornament of the individual artist, which supposedly displays the intelligence, skill, and great leisure and richness of the artist, as a signal of the fitness of the artist, especially (and originally) in the mating game (think of Picasso). Whereas art created for the group can signal the fitness and power of the group (think of elaborate religious art), which can then reward the individual artists for their great affirmations of the group, and more importantly enhance the group in competition with other groups.

We might then say that since group-selection is the central unit of selection in humans, as E. O. Wilson has recently affirmed, group-selection would define and create the higher art. History seems to show this as true with the greatest art usually defined as art that affirms what the group holds most sacred.

This kind of explanation brings art theory back to biology, back to life, and forward to the extension and evolution of life---we can then better see the wild abstractions of art philosophy through the ages for what they were, often empty signaling on the part of individual philosophers or artists.  We are looking for truth and reality regarding art, which is perhaps is our form of signaling.

How art can imitate and expand life (from the archive)

Is “existence suspended,” in the experience of beauty, and do we become “detached” from immediate desires, is “disinterestedness” the central idea, all of which Kant suggests regarding art?

There is adaptive value to beauty which can be see n in both art and religion. One of the primary attributes of Godhood in theological materialism is to attain the zenith of beauty, along with the zenith of intelligence and the zenith of noble character. These higher values are here understood as
evolved to in material and supermaterial evolution, which is where their adaptive value resides.

Contrary to Kant the “imaginative experience” of art is not detached from real biological life, it intensities, enhances, and expands life. Works of art do happen in the mind but they are not removed from biological drives and instincts. The fiction-drive relates to the beauty-instinct in the biological ways of desire. Beauty in human beings is related to good health and good health has survival and reproductive value.

Only when we trans-value and remove the definition of God from material and supermaterial life do we define beauty in art as suspended from life, after which art can only be seen in disinterestedness, which it is to many gurus. When Godhood is seen as a non-material, spiritual-only construction in the mind or soul, that is when art and religion depart from the real world.

We drifted away from didactic and moral art as we became more literate, but as evolutionary psychologists point out, story-telling had survival benefits in the Pleistocene. It still does, when we relate beauty to real biological life, evolution, and religion. There is no need to use a hammer to didactically or morally inspire us, art is usually best when it is subtle. Imagining Godhood attained in future material and supermaterial evolution has religious and artistic value, but it also has survival and reproductive value.

Bypassing the confusion of religious symbols (from 2008)

Traditionally, material life is symbolized as the snake coiling itself around the Tree, meaning a person who does not involve themselves in desirelessness---desire is symbolized as the snake.

The involutionary symbolism of the Traditionalists, and those who study the Kabbalah, and others, can be an aid, although a complicated aid, in reaching the God-Within, but Godhood is only "reflected" inwardly. Much of the involutionary knowledge can be mistaken for ultimate wisdom, and it can become knowledge more  like the Ouroboros, the snake swallowing its tail.

We could apply another symbol, the Firebird, the Phoenix, rising from the desireless state of the involutionary god-nirvana to materially evolve to real Godhood---but does it even need a symbol?

Many secret societies appear to be using ancient primordial symbols, which were originally meant to aid elite religious seekers in reaching the involutionary Soul or God within. And the Jungians tend to apply symbols to the human psyche as the source of religion. For a purer reading of primordial symbols there is the the esoteric writings of Rene Guenon.

Or you could bypass the confusion of religious symbols and cut the Gordian Knot confusion of religious symbols, rather than endlessly trying to nitpick and unravel the symbols. Aren't symbols supposed to illuminate?

Far from disparaging science, the theological materialism says that science can elevate spiritual alchemy to “material alchemy,”  transforming man to Godhood in material evolution. In the Twofold Path with involution we experience the inward symbolic hint of Godhood (spiritual alchemy), but with outward  evolution (material alchemy) we materially evolve to ascending levels of real Godhood.

Science has, until now, enjoyed prestige and support for the pursuit of more mundane non-religious goals, much as the modern chemists have departed from the spiritual goals of the alchemists. The sacred goal of science and religion (or all fields) can aid each other to attain Godhood in material evolution, as we rise out of our modern funk.

Literalizing the unliteral (from 2008)

For centuries religion has developed symbols using literal objects to stand for spiritual things. It is time to turn this around again. For example, “New Creation” and “Heaven” are not merely spiritual symbols for indwelling states of consciousness, they are actual places and things which we materially evolve to. With this in mind, prehistorical religions can join traditional religions and move beyond them to transcending the unliteral with the literal.

Symbolic language is not the only way to express spiritual things, especially since spiritual things are the evolved-material; “New Jerusalem” is not merely a new highest consciousness, but is a highest level of evolution.

I do not deny the interpretation of Heaven in the Bible as a symbolic highest mode of consciousness, but I do define this highest consciousness as only the indirect involutionary inward way to experience the indwelling bliss, which is not God.

I affirm a more literal interpretation of these things in the more direct Evolutionary Outward Path. A “new man” literally means a new man, a “new heaven” literally means a new super-material place evolved to from the material. The Evolutionary Outward Path reliteralizes unliteral symbols.

Reality doesn't require the primitive satanic explanation of things

The Will to Godhood, or Tirips, is an active material force within life always moving against any resistance to life. The cosmos flows toward life in this way, but the cosmos also flows toward death and disorder, which has been defined as “satanic.” But death and disorder are the absence of life and not an active negative force. The activities between forces in material life and evolution are not God against Satan, or Satan against God, real or symbolized, but are simply activities between forces, natural interactions, competition, etc. Reality doesn't require the primitive satanic interpretation or explanation of things. Life is good, resistance to life is not good.

Micro and Macro, Man and Godhood

All the elements in the Kosmos appear to be in the human body in microcosm, it has been said. When Godhood is attained in evolution, Godhood is the macrocosmic zenith of the elements seen in the human body. This would mean that Godhood has a Soul, Spirit and Body as we do, but these would be at their highest possible evolution. The problem with this symbolism comes when, as in many religions and ancient philosophies, it is thought that wisdom can be found within the human body to make one “omniscient.” This goal of the Involuntary Inward Path is confounded with Godhood.

We can contact the Soul in the Inward Path but this must not be mistaken for Godhood, no matter how blissful it is. We are required to evolve in the Outward Path to Godhood in material-spiritual evolution, and it is then that the Soul, Spirit and Body of Godhood is attained, which is vastly more advanced, and is omniscient, unlike the Soul and body of man.

Bringing Back The Giants

This is the Great Error and the Great Spiritual Blockade against evolving to Godhood: the Giants, or Titans, symbolizing the material world, or the Body, and Dionysus, symbolizing the Spirit, are not at war with one another, and it is time for the war to end. Could these giants have been small surviving groups of Neanderthal?

This transposes thousands of years of the occult perspective. The Giants or the material world, and the Spirit, are Twin Partners on the Twin Path to Godhood, the Involuntary Inward Path (the Soul and Spirit Within) and the Evolutionary Outward Path (Evolution to Godhood activated by the Spirit).

On Nonduality

In Tantric Hinduism, Shiva is the inactive principle (male) and Shakti is the active principle (female), which creates a false duality, and also turns gender symbolism upside down.

Their goal is to use Shakti—pure power-- to attain or awaken in oneself the main goal of Shiva—pure spirit-- which they claim then attains a nondual condition.

If this goal were not located within the human being the symbolism might work. According to Evola, in Hinduism (see Upanishads) nondualism, the atma, is located within the human being.

Nonduality is not located within the human being, which is the Great Error of Traditional religions. Nonduality is the evolutionary goal of the Body, Soul and Spirit as they seek to evolve to Godhood in the Kosmos, the Real Nonduality. This way Shakti seems to better symbolize the active male Spirit and Shiva the inactive female Soul. And these must work together in each body, in the evolution to Godhood, the Real Nonduality.

The Sphinx

Some have said that the Sphinx of ancient Egypt represented the Soul (head) trying to escape the body (animal), but I would transpose this and say that the Sphinx can be a symbol of Civilizing the Beast, man evolving from animal to God, activated by the Spirit. "Escape" is not the interpretation here, evolution is. The evolving body is the vehicle for the Spirit all the way to Godhood.

The Two Paths In Relation To Tradition

The Involutionary Inward Path relates to Traditional religion, revealed theology, and Traditional morality. The Evolutionary Outward Path relates to evolutionary knowledge, science, naturalism, but also revealed theology. The Inward Path shows respect for the Traditional beliefs of the people, which are interpreted as symbolic representations of the natural evolution to Godhood, seen inwardly as the Path to the Soul. Do we shield new ideas under old religious ideas? The symbols of the Inward Path simply symbolize the Outward Path.

The bottom line: we could say that the Kabbalah is a copy of the original Zoroastrian system (in turn perhaps a copy of a Sumerian system, or Sumer copied Indo-Europeans, or an earlier Western people) ), but the Kabbalah made some advances over the older system, for example, having God more involved in the world, and emphasizing less than the Zend Avesta a supreme pure abstraction beyond God. In the Theoevolutionary Church (TC), Being and Thought blend in God, which seems unlike the Zend Avesta and somewhat more like the more monotheistic Kabbalah. However, since the Kabbalah, in essence, describes God beyond “evil” matter, we cannot agree. Pure Abstraction of the Absolute exists in the Mind of God only, and is not the creator of God. Therefore, we do not need to remove God from the material world. God is the Supreme Object at the zenith of the evolution of the world.

In TC the Involutionary Inward Path absorbs some of the views of both the Zend Avesta and the Kabbalah, but then we see these views as symbolic representation of the Evolutionary Outward Path, where nature evolves to Godhood. This is our advance over the Traditional mystical systems.

In TC eventually the Great Kosmic Center of Satan becomes part of the Holy Spirit and God. This cosmogony does seem to tally with the oldest Zoroastrian texts and the texts of their disciple, the Kabbalah, which has the Prince of Darkness, Sama-el, becoming an angel of light at the end of his days and thus returning to Divine Grace.  All matter has the chance to evolve to Godhood in TC.

The Inward Ouroboros

The Ouroboros symbol indicates the exclusively Inward Path of Traditionalism, which also requires working in harmony with the Outward Path of the Theoevolutionary  Church.

Fulfilling ancient symbolism

As  the Theoevolutionary Church seeks to bring the Involutionary Inward Path into the Evolutionary Outward Path, and vice versa, we are seeking the ancient hope of a reconciliation between the material (temporal) and the spiritual, between priests and builders, Church and state.

At least in legend something like this has been tried before, in the building of Solomon's Temple, with a spiritual plan executed by material means, the spiritual plan of Solomon and the material work of Hiram. But both sides fought for their own ends. Thus we have the Kosmic feud between life and death, evolution and anti-evolution, generation and degeneration, material and spiritual.

Now in the rivalry, the temporal powers have utterly rejected the spiritual powers and vice versa. When the temporal plan refuses to follow the spiritual plan, or the spiritual follow the temporal means, then, if the Temple is built at all, the Temple is built in error.

Why have the religions deprived themselves of evolution? To stop evolving to God is an anomaly in nature. In doing so both have repudiated the authority of God. The Theoevolutionary Church and the Priests of the Outward Path once again seek to fuse the inner and outer worlds, to make a new “hammer” and a new “word” to regenerate the ancient goal, the evolution of the material to the spiritual and to Godhood.

Defining our blog title

“Civilizing The Beast” is attempting to flow with the order and justice of the Kosmos, which is administered by God, where Creation and Destruction occur but also Preservation, and with immortal Preservation for the virtuous victors in evolving to the God first seen within. The “Beast” in this sense is the disorder and injustice and entropy not flowing with the order and justice of the Kosmos. Satan is defined in this zone; everything, including the devils, are within the Kosmos beneath God, the forces of darkness are a part of the flow or backflow of the Kosmos. For humans the great difficulty has been to understand the order and justice of God.

A symbol can join the divine and human

To paraphrase Martin Donougho in “Myth And Symbol,” priests give names to the nameless. Explicating and making symbols are the same. A symbol inhabits the realm between the ideal (spirit) and sensuous ( matter). A symbol can join the divine and the human. Symbol consists of a momentary totality.

Literalizing the Unliteral

For centuries religion has developed symbols using literal objects to stand for spiritual things. It is time to turn this around again. For example, “New Creation” and “Heaven” are not merely spiritual symbols for indwelling states of consciousness, they are actual places and things, which we evolve to.

With this, prehistorical religions can join traditional religions and move beyond to the Theoevolutionary Church transcending both the literal and unliteral.

Symbolic language is not the only way to express spiritual things, especially since spiritual things are the evolved-material. “New Jerusalem” is not seen merely as a new highest consciousness, but as a highest level of evolution.

We do not deny the interpretation of Heaven in the Bible as a symbolic highest mode of consciousness, but we do define this highest consciousness as only the indirect Involutionary Inward way to experience the indwelling Soul.

We also affirm a more literal interpretation of these things in the more direct Evolutionary Outward Path.

A “new man” literally means a new man, a “new heaven” literally means a new material-spiritual place evolved to from the material to the spiritual. The Evolutionary Outward Path reliteralizes unliteral symbols.

More on the Fall

If we follow the guidance of the Spirit we can reach Godhood, if we do not we may not. This is the essence of the idea of the Fall of man. In the Garden of Eden man was following the track of the Spirit evolving toward Godhood. When he stopped following the Spirit, and allowed the Soul-body to dominate, then he fell from Grace into sin.

When man is centered on his Soul, ie. his ego or psyche, he acts differently than when he is centered on the Spirit. When centered only on the ego-body-soul, evolution may stop, or move sideways, or move back from the direction of the Spirit. Humanity can even be destroyed.

When we stop the guidance of evolution by the Spirit and follow instead the ego-only-soul, then as Genesis says, “The earth will bring forth thorns and thistles.” And women “shall bring forth children with pain.” This was symbolized by Adam and Eve being turned out of Eden.

The way of return is not easy or simple. This present world will pass away. New species will rise, as Noah and his sons survived the flood.

The Alchemy of God

What better than evolution can discern how one essential part could be logically deduced from another thing? This way we can see how God might be defined as the accumulated parts expanded into a Whole much greater than the parts.

The “alchemy of God” could describe evolution of the phenomenal world to Godhood, we may dimly know the process, but our “philosopher's stone” does not know the “supersubstance” which defines God.

And we need to know the “Cause.” The urge for rejuvenation or the need for anything else is not the cause since God needs nothing.

Bird And Snake

Traditionally, material life is symbolized as the snake coiling itself around the Tree, or around a man who does not involve himself in action without desire, desire is this way symbolized as the snake.

We apply another symbol, the Firebird, the Phoenix who rises from the state of involutionary nirvana to evolve to the evolutionary God.
