The march through the institutions was more biological than ideological

Hierarchies and classes are part of human nature and human behavior, they are not evil, as the New Left tried to tell us. The rise of the New Left and the changing of the classes continues to be far less harmonious in multi-cultural/multi-ethnic societies than in past ethnically homogeneous traditional societies, due to the reality that as the people change the culture changes, or to be more precise, as the ethnic groups change the culture changes.

This is mainly why the New Left was shocking to the old guard as they marched through the institutions. It was seen as a decline into ideological crudeness and radicalism by the old homogeneous hierarchy when it was mainly due to the changing of distinctly different ethnic cultures, and the biological origin of most of our social behavior. Think of the fall of the old Western aristocracies this way and you get a more accurate picture of what really took place than you get from seeing only the clash of political ideologies.

Conservatives usually don't speak of the loss of conservatism this way, but they will have to begin doing so if they ever want to revive Western culture. Then it will need to occur to them that human nature and all human groups work best in ethnostates. Predictably as a protective measure against successful objections to their takeover the New Left made it political incorrect to offer the practical and rational solution of an ethnopluralism of ethnostates.

An ethnopluralism of ethnostates could even be established legally in the United States with our constitutional separation of powers and states, protected by federalism. It may require a few constitutional amendments to give more power to the states and regions to move toward an ethnopluralism of ethnostates.
